We finally arrived in Belfast at 6:30pm only to drive directly South. We are starting our trip properly in the morning at Brú na Bóinne and some surrounding attractions in County Meath and then taking the short drive north again tomorrow-noon. We will then tour Belfast and have dinner with a very sweet acquaintance of mine whom I met in Cambodia. From there we will proceed with our original counter-clockwise loop plan around the island.
The only indications that we had left North Ireland (United Kingdom) and entered the Republic of Ireland were a sign about some invisible customs office, billboards for currency exchange, and the sudden use of two languages on the road signs. While the Irish looks really cool, I was really hoping for a proper sign. Maybe something along the lines of Welcome to the Republic of Ireland. Oh well!
In the meantime, here is my first ever picture of Ireland taken from the ferry pulling into harbor:
Not the best picture, I’ll admit. Nor the most interesting. But it is the FIRST! My first sighting of my ancestral homeland.
